Goal 8 - Decent Work & Economic Growth

“Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all.”

Our company itself is an engine of sustainable economic growth, enabling families to flourish productively from generation to generation.

M&I Materials plays an active role in supporting decent work and economic growth through our long-established approach to employee development.

We have implemented programmes that really deliver on making our employees feel valued, for example we prioritise the health and safety of all our employees, implemented by an internal health and safety team; we also provide access to an occupational health nurse and welfare and mental health support.

Throughout their employment we reward our employees with annual bonuses, annual salary reviews and profit share schemes.

We also support our staff in gaining further qualifications, such as degree sponsorship. We have six apprentices, each with individual development plans. Our first engineering apprentice, who joined us seven years ago, recently qualified with a first-class honours degree in mechanical engineering.

We support women in STEM careers as an equal opportunities employer; our first female scientist joined us over 40 years ago and remains a part of the team.

Our employee code of practice comprises policies that include health and safety, training, whistle-blowing, anti-bribery and corruption, anti-slavery, equal opportunities, and maternity pay.

We also carry out extensive training (including equality and diversity, modern slavery, bullying and harassment training) to ensure our employees uphold the highest ethical standards and are supported in reflecting our values as a good corporate citizen.

In 2017 M&I Materials entered into a manufacturing agreement with ISEGEN South Africa to manufacture the MIDEL natural ester fluids in that country, utilising locally grown soybean and rapeseed crops. This has brought several local benefits, including supporting the Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE) programme, through business ownership, education (a Ph.D. programme), training and development.

It’s a source of pride that we strive to provide an environment where our people can learn, grow and be excited about what they’re doing and the contribution they are making.

We want people who work at M&I Materials to value the ethos we have of being a family, of being connected to one another and to our community.

“Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all.”
