At M&I Materials we make products which help our customers to safely deliver sustainable cities and communities.

The pursuit of this goal will be vital for achieving fuel diversification, conserving natural resources and improving energy security across the world.

In understanding Goal 13, we can see many ways in which we are positive contributors. Here we’ve highlighted just one key example which typifies how our products are accelerating the march towards affordable, clean energy worldwide.

Addressing climate change and limiting global warming will require more energy in the form of fossil fuel-free electricity, with some estimates suggesting that by 2050 electricity will meet about 75% of final energy demand in Europe.

At M&I Materials we play our part in combating climate change by enhancing our own production processes, driving down environmental impacts wherever and however we can. We also support our supply chain partners to make the same changes we are making.

Being serious about climate change means recognising how our business affects the environment and taking steps not just to reduce that impact but making the necessary long-term changes to our practices and behaviours. Moreover, in having a portfolio of products supplied to renewable energy markets, which also reduce and offset environmental harm when in-use.

We have developed our MIDEL rapeseed-based natural ester fluid to put sustainability thinking into action. Using rapeseed, instead of soya, means we get more yield per hectare (and hence more sustainable as a raw material).

There is another important consequence when our MIDEL ester transformer fluids are deployed in substations – namely, a reduction in CO2 production. Conventional substation design requires a concrete basin (or bund) to be placed beneath the transformer; this is to capture toxic and non-biodegradable mineral oil in the event of the transformer tank rupturing. The negative aspects of cement production are well-known: the manufacturing process is the biggest source of greenhouse gases after coal-powered electricity, accounting for around 5% of annual man-made global CO2 production. For every tonne of cement produced, one tonne of CO2 is also produced. However, using MIDEL fire-safe and biodegradable transformer fluid means the need for the concrete bund can be removed – a tangible environmental benefit.

We are engaged in reviews, on an ongoing basis, to substitute raw materials when sustainable alternatives become available. In 2020 we replaced one such raw material used in our dielectric liquids with a carbon-neutral alternative. ISCC certified, this change now saves over 7,000,000 metric tonnes of CO2, cradle to grave: the equivalent of driving over 20.5 million kilometres in a mid-sized (ICE) family car.
